Excerpt:

I clapped my hands together and practically scared Scarlett into a sitting position. “Okay, so I guess it’s time we get you cleaned up.”

She shook her head, and a mess of crimson spirals moved haphazardly across her fair face. “Oh, ouch.” She reached up and touched the back of her head.

I was instantly at her side. “Lie back down.” She gently slid on the couch. “Crap. Maybe you have a concussion.” I looked behind me at the front door, but I knew Granny had already left. I carefully sat beside Scarlett and moved a wayward lock away from her face. I leaned over and started feeling behind the back of her head. I felt her eyes on me as I groped her head like I was checking a watermelon for freshness. I really wasn’t sure what I was doing because suddenly touching Scarlett sent my senses into overload. Her hair was soft and silky between my fingers. I slowed down my rhythm and gently massaged her scalp. A low murmur escaped her lips. I quickly glanced at her, and her eyes were closed. I wanted to lean over and kiss her perfectly plump lips, but I returned my focus to her head where my hands wove through her wild hair that was a wonderland of richness. Even though she was soaked in wine, her head smelled like lavender. Now when I looked again at her, she looked up at me and smiled.

“I don’t feel any bumps?” I asked as more of a question than a statement.

Scarlett’s deep, husky laugh rose to my ears like an aphrodisiac that sent a signal to my brain and straight to my jeans as if she had suddenly cupped my cock. Her laughter was that enticing. It spiked a primal desire to have her beneath me with her mouth wrapped around my cock, which was beginning to grow as fast as my field of bean stocks.

I quickly shook my head and jerked away from her as if from a hot flame. “Yup,” I said brushing my hands together and trying to shake free from the heat that radiated between us. “I think you’re A-okay. Okay-dokay.”

She looked up at me, and her faint green eyes questioned me. “What happened?”

I shrugged. “Nothing. Just taking Granny’s orders to get you cleaned up. So let’s get moving and get you ready.” I hiked my thumb toward where I imagined the bathroom was located. “I’ll start the shower, run a bath, or grab a bucket of water from the well.” I scratched my head. “I’m not sure if there’s running water out here. But no matter.” I snapped. “I’ll do whatever it takes.” I pointed to Scarlett. “To get you freshened up.” Who am I? I sounded like some jingle writer for a feminine hygiene commercial.

Scarlett shook her head. “But Granny won’t be back for at least an hour.”

I nodded. “Yes, but she left me in charge to get you cleaned up.”

Scarlett slightly raised her hips off the couch, and her yellow skirt fell forward to reveal sheer panties that were streaked red. But even stained in wine, it was clear to see that Scarlett was a true redhead.

“I don’t think I should move in my condition,” she said with a coy look on her face. “Could you help me, Jack?”

I swallowed hard and looked at the tiniest, barely-there V-shaped panty that was held together by thin, pink, spaghetti-like straps that hugged Scarlett’s narrow hips. I wanted to gnaw them off with my teeth to get to the strip of hair that was tucked beneath the sexy sheer. Instead, I held Scarlett in my gaze.

“Maybe you hit your head too hard?” I said trying to maintain some semblance of control, trying to be the good guy, trying to remember that we just met. Trying to get a handle on a situation that was suddenly moving too fast, too soon, and yet felt so right, which made no sense at all.

Scarlett rolled her head from side-to-side. Locks of her hair swayed in a truly mesmerizing, hypnotic fashion. “Jack, Jack, Jack. You over-think things way too much. If this Wolfe guy really is so bad and I really was in harm’s way then you just came and rescued me.” She looked up at me, and in that look I could have shot my load.

“Shouldn’t we be living in the moment?” Her voice dripped with sex appeal, and my mind and body stopped working together. “Shouldn’t we forget what’s behind us and start moving forward? I’m not usually this way, but tonight hasn’t gone anywhere like I had planned. I met some Wolfe in the woods. I knew he was bad news, I knew that, but I didn’t listen to my gut.”

For a moment anger flashed across her face. “I should have listened to my first instinct. But I didn’t.” She shook her head. “I did what was expected of me. I shared my dessert. I played nice.”

Her hands were in her lap, and she opened them like she was releasing a bomb. “And then because of my kindness, I got knocked out by you, and now you tell me that Blue may have lost everything?” Her voice dropped like she was about to cry. “If we can’t save what Blue lost…”

Scarlett placed both of her hands over her chest, and in that moment I could tell that what she needed. What she wanted wasn’t necessarily me, but some retreat, some reprieve, some form of escapism from everything that had just happened. And if I could give her thirty minutes, though I hoped much longer, of total release, what was the harm?

Life has been tough for Huyana. From the moment of her violent conception, the odds were stacked against her.
Meeting Matthew Duggan and his family changes her life forever.
Family can be close. People can be kind. Love can be good.
But a lifetime of rejection and abuse is difficult to overcome and Huyana struggles to trust the man she loves. There are secrets in her past and she fears revealing them.
Can Huyana find the happiness she craves and allow herself to be claimed by her Montana cowboy?

Chapter One

“Edie! Get yer ass in here!” The gravelly voice rang out in the small house.
Huyana froze and held her breath. The knife she’d been using to chop carrots slipped from her grasp and clattered onto the tabletop. She hugged her slim waist and listened carefully for sounds of movement.
Nothing.
Yet.
Had William Montgomery gone back to sleep? She hoped so. If he was asking for his wife then he was going to have one of his bad days and therefore the longer he rested, the better. At least if he woke later, she would have company to help her deal with him. Even with all her experience of people, the old man’s sudden fluctuations from joy to anger to confusion still unsettled her and she’d prefer to have someone else nearby.
Someone like Matthew Duggan?
She shrugged away the thought. In the short space of time in which she’d known the handsome cowboy, she’d seen only good in him. He’d been kind, helpful and attentive, even coming to find her in Virginia City, where she’d been employed as a maid, to offer her the post as carer to William Montgomery. Not that other folks were hammering down the Duggans’ door to get the position, of course. But Matthew knew that her employer was leaving town and Huyana would soon be without an income. Matthew had suggested that his older brother, Kenan, offer Huyana the job. And mighty glad she was about it too. At first. But now she knew how hard it was caring for William Montgomery alone, she wondered if she’d made the right decision.
But of course she had. What other choice did she have? With her circumstances and her questionable background, what else could she expect to do? Whore? Beg? Steal? The choices for a mixed-race woman were limited indeed. Besides, it meant that she got to see Matthew Duggan regularly, even if she did clam up like a sixteen-year-old maiden every time he stepped over the threshold.
“Edie!”
Huyana jumped. She’d have to go check on William. He was clearly distressed. His wife had been in the ground just over a month. Sometimes he remembered this clearly, but at other times, he still thought she was alive and well. A wave of sympathy washed over Huyana. She knew what it was to love and lose someone and William deserved her compassion. The poor man was dealing with his raw grief in his moments of lucidity. Healing would likely take him longer than the average person because he wasn’t experiencing the heartache constantly with its full ferocity. Instead, it came in agonizing bursts, then, as if his mind was protecting him, he regressed to his confused state and forgot all about Edie’s death until the next lucid period. It was like a slow form of torture, and Huyana wished on a daily basis that she could do something to alleviate William’s pain and anguish.
Huyana scooped up the carrots from the flat wooden chopping board and dropped them into a bowl then wiped her hands on her apron. She crossed the room and stood outside the door of William’s bedroom then rapped her knuckles against the wood.
“You all right in there, Mr. Montgomery?”
“Who in the hell is that?”
Huyana shivered as she heard the confusion in William’s tone.
“It’s me, Mr. Montgomery. Huyana. Your help.”
“Say what?” His voice was closer now, as if he muttered with his lips pressed against the wooden boards of the door. Huyana slowly unlocked the door and took a step back. The lock was a precautionary measure that the Duggans had insisted upon to prevent William from wandering off during the night when Huyana slept or when she was outside in the yard. “Who’s ya say yer?”
“Huyana.” Her own name tripped off her lips as it had done thousands of times before, but this time it filled her with dread because she feared his reaction.
“What in the hell kind of a name is that?”
The door swung inward and Huyana braced herself as William Montgomery staggered out into the main room of the house. He reminded her of an acorn calf, all unsteady on his legs and wary of his surroundings. Huyana winced as his stale smell reached her nostrils. She had only washed him last evening with Catherine Duggan’s help but it seemed that the old man had pissed his bed again. She’d left the pot right next to his bed in plain view, but unfortunately he didn’t always think to use it. At times, the floor and his undergarments seemed to serve him just as well.
Like an animal.
No.
Like a child. A poor helpless infant who sometimes doesn’t know right from wrong.
William stared around the room as if seeing it for the first time. He squinted against the September morning light that seeped through the small windows and warmed the floorboards. He eyed the fire that burned in the grate suspiciously, as if wondering how it had gotten there. His face held the look of a lost child as he scratched his matted gray hair, and Huyana’s heart broke for him.

It was going to be a bad day.

BLURB – For Ruby's Love
Calhoun’s a simple cowboy with more problems in his life than he can handle at the moment. After nearly two years, he struggles to hang onto a relationship with Daniel, his first male lover. Daniel is worried about him because of the fire, his concern for his prized breeding mare, and because he is determined to buy the neighboring ranch to expand. But Daniel isn’t a businessman without goals of his own for expansion, a fact that frustrates Calhoun as well. He doesn’t want to lose Daniel, but will their differences finally be too much?

Daniel considers himself a lucky man to have met the rancher, someone almost his opposite and someone who he doesn’t want to live without. Standing beside the moody Calhoun has been difficult since the fire that burned down a horse barn, took the lives of two valuable horses, and traumatized a favored mare. Along with all of that, his harried friend is determined to expand his ranch holdings. Daniel is against the purchase and would prefer to find a way to slow the man down. Lately, he’s also begun worrying if maybe he isn’t enough to satisfy his lover’s needs.

Complicating everything even more, Ruby shows up later than expected at Calhoun’s ranch to honor a job as a horse therapist that her father had agreed to before his sudden death. She knows what happened to the mare and is certain she can help her, if given the chance. But the stubborn rancher can’t get past the idea of her being a woman, someone not strong enough to work with such a damaged horse. They butt heads over the matter until she finds an ally in Daniel. He is concerned and yet believes in her abilities. Another problem arises, though. She and Calhoun have been skirting around an unwanted attraction, and then she discovers another surprising interest between her and Daniel.

Excerpt from The CEO and The Cowboy (PG13 Rating)

“Want a tour?” He desperately wanted to get him up to his bedroom. He wanted to strip
him out of that Western-cut suit, find out if he was a boxers or briefs man. He was curious if
those pecs were as muscled as he suspected, if the abs were six-packed. He longed to….

“Why did you really bring me here?”

Surprised, he stood quietly for several long seconds, debating how to answer. Then he
decided actions might just be better than words at the moment. If he had the nerve. Yes!
Yes, you do.

He moved directly in front of him, watched the man’s nostrils flare, and his eyes widen.
But the cowboy didn’t step back, and he didn’t look ready to send a fist into his face. Nerves
tangling in his stomach, he put his hands around Cordell’s neck and leaned closer.

The big man tensed, but still didn’t tell him to back off. He didn’t say a word, just stood
there looking wary, but determined. Clearly curious. Cautious, too.

Unable to resist any longer, he slanted his mouth over the tempting lips. Fire seared him.
Need. Desperation.

Cordell stiffened even more, and he was pretty sure his cowboy had never done this
before. He appeared uncomfortable, and his heart pounded so hard he could feel it. Yet he
didn’t pull away.

Not wanting to frighten the man off, he gently slid his tongue along the crease of those
lips until, finally, they opened. He had to have more, but he had to go slowly.

Surprising him again, he felt Cordell put his arms around his waist, pushing under his
suit coat, pulling him closer. God, yes!

Heat raged through him, and he felt the warmth of the body pressed against his. Their

hearts thudded, chest against chest. Then the man shuddered even as they tangled tongues.

Excerpt from For Ruby's Love (R Rating)

Calhoun couldn’t have been more shocked to open the door and find Ruby masturbating.

Never in his wildest dreams would he have imagined such a thing happening in here. But, damn, he would be dreaming about this for months, maybe longer.

He knew this was a very private moment. He should stop staring at her, back away, and pull the door closed. They need not ever mention what he’d discovered. Yet, instead of being the gentleman and leaving, he stepped into the room and closed the door behind him.

“That’s such an incredible turn on.” He felt like an idiot the instant the words left his mouth. He hadn’t lied, though. His body pulsed with desperation. One hint of encouragement and he would be on the bed, licking off those sweet cream-coated fingers, and driving into her himself.

“Ummm,” she struggled to speak, no doubt embarrassed. Her face flamed as she held still, looking uncertain about pulling her fingers free. “Well, this is awkward.”

He shrugged and took a hesitant step closer. “I suppose for you it is.” He inched nearer, his heart pounding. “I’m pretty much enjoying the view.”

“Really?” She worried her lower lip and dropped her hips to the mattress, slipping her fingers from her body.

“Hell yes!” He concentrated on not running to the bed, pleased she hadn’t demanded he leave. “I’ve never had the pleasure of watching a woman do that.”

She gave him a shy smile. “I don’t do this very often. I just…. I just got so frustrated. I couldn’t sleep. I….”

He sucked in a breath and hazarded walking another few feet in her direction. “Are you still feeling…frustrated?” God, he hoped so. He could take care of her problem, and his.

Introducing #EarthBorn - Shifter meet Witch @CherieNicholls #pnr #romance

I am delighted...nay...overjoyed to welcome my mate Cherie Nicholls with her awesome new book. Over to you Cherie....

Thank you for having me!

Demi isn’t a big talker, so having her tell me their tale was hard work. Well she’s not much of a talker unless you’re a tree. But then we all know that trees are terrible gossips!

I hope you enjoy Earth Born, and the tale of these two crazy people….shifters,…witches…ah man you know what I mean!

Blurb:

Nate Barend’s past has left deep scars. Growing up in foster homes, he never dreamed of his family coming to find him. Why would he, when he remembered so clearly the day they’d thrown him out with the trash.

As an earth elemental, Demi Hills has an affinity with nature—well, most nature anyway. But when her relationship with Nate goes from “friends with benefits” to “it’s complicated,” she can’t seem to shake him. The damn coyote/wolf is like a dog with a bone—or should that be a shifter with a bone?

Stupid mutt.

Excerpt:

With a cautious look around the room, Nate lifted the cup to his nose and sniffed at it. Because if he was sitting here, right now, with these people, someone had to have drugged him.

“I understand we’re probably the last people on earth you’d expect to see.”

That was an understatement of magnificent proportions.

“But once we realized that Alpha Dawson was trying to contact one Nathanial Dawson, we couldn’t stand by and do nothing.”

Trying to contact him? That was a joke. The old Alpha had written, emailed, and even telegrammed. How the hell he had even found a telegram machine and someone to actually deliver it was still a mystery. More importantly why couldn’t these people stand by? It wasn’t like they’d ever bothered before.

“We realize that the normal process would have been to petition the local Shifter Council, but we are racing against time. If we didn’t get to you first to warn you, well things might be very different right now.”

Warn him? That had probably been the third most interesting and shocking thing that had happened to him today.

Not only had he watched a pack of coyote shifters—or at least part of one—ride into town on motorbikes, but when they’d said they’d been looking for him, he started to look for hidden cameras.

But the one thing that amazed him the most, the one that made him question if he’d been drugged, had been when they announced they were family. Actual blood relations of his.

For an orphan and a child of the care system, it was the last thing he’d ever expected to hear.

Some kids in the homes he’d grown up in had dreamed of days like this.

But not him. Never him.

He knew his family, knew exactly where they were. He remembered them all very clearly. Especially the moment his grandfather had taken a scared little six-year-old boy, who’d just lost his parents in a car crash, had barely survived it himself, and handed him over to child services because he didn’t want him.

If he had been born a full wolf shifter, like his father and grandfather, he had no doubt his family would have kept him. But his father had made the mistake of falling in love and mating with a coyote shifter.

The ‘weakness’ of his mixed blood had been too much for the old man to handle.

Now here he was, sitting across the table from his mother’s family, almost thirty years later.

Too late.

He placed the cup down on the table and looked across at the man opposite him.

Apparently they were cousins, but he didn’t remember them, and he definitely didn’t see the family resemblance. They were pure coyotes, with reddish brown hair and cold eyes. Nate’s own leaned more toward natural gray, showing his gray wolf heritage.

The Alpha had introduced himself as Carlos and told him they were cousins. Apparently Nate’s mother and Carlos’ father were siblings. Nate couldn’t remember him, not that he tried very hard. He’d spent a lifetime forgetting about that family who’d clearly forgotten about him.

The second man was Franko, the beta and clearly the less chatty of the two. The man’s gaze made Nate want to reach across the table and punch him in the face, just for the sake of it.

He looked them both over. It was time to remind them this wasn’t their home.

“A few things spring to mind.” He leaned back in the chair as if he didn’t have a care in the world. “One, my name is Barend. Nate Barend. Nathanial Dawson died the day Alpha Dawson threw me out with the trash.”

He raised two fingers, counting off his points.

“Two, I ignored every communication I’ve had from Alpha Dawson. Since the man I called grandfather is dead to me. And three, and this is the most important one.” He leaned forward to emphasize his point. “I really don’t think my family likes having you in their home.”

Low growls, from different species, could be heard.

Carlos, who’d been looking far too self-assured for Nate’s liking, started to look around nervously.

“Little brother, everything okay?” Damian walked into the room from the back garden.

He didn’t need to look to know that Jake was at the other door; and out of sight, but not too far away, would be the foster children of this home, watching and waiting.

“Everything is just perfect.”

“Little brother? You let a cat call you brother?”

The look of disgust on Franko’s face was entertaining, another reason not to have these bigoted coyotes around longer than needed.

“No, of course I don’t allow a cat to call me brother. I allow three cats to call me brother. It’s a shame you won’t get to meet my alpha. I’m sure he’ll be disheartened.”

“Your alpha is your adopted brother?” Carlos asked.

“Yep, and a lion. But hey, we don’t judge here.”

“I’m sure, if I speak to his beta, we can make arrangements to stay.”

“You are.” That shocked him. “But why stay? I have no interest in Alpha Dawson, or you.”

“Alpha Dawson went to great lengths to keep you away from your rightful family. He told us you were dead. Don’t you care why he’s trying to get back in touch now?”

“Nope.” He really didn’t. Perhaps he might’ve once. But not anymore.

“But your life is in danger. Doesn’t that worry you?”

Nate laughed. He couldn’t help it. “Boys, you really have no idea where you’ve come to, do you? My life’s been in danger since the second I left my father’s pack. If you think for a second an old alpha and some long lost cousins are going to worry me, well, it just goes to show how much you really don’t know about me.”

He stood, the chair scraping on the floor as he did. When he was at his full height he looked down at the first blood relations he’d seen in years.

“You know what, there’s a bed and breakfast in town. If you feel you want to stay for a day or two, I won’t stand in your way. But this—” he waved a hand between himself and them, “—isn’t going to happen. I have no interest in you, or Dawson. As long as you remember that, you’re welcome to stay.”

Without a backward glance he headed out of the kitchen and the house and down the back steps. Damian caught up with him as he reached the ground.

“Your grandfather’s been in touch? Why didn’t you tell us?”

He’d thought about it, but what was he going to say? His grandfather, alpha and the man who’d abandoned him, was contacting him? Several of the letters had started off nice enough, but the ones of late had started to sound more like orders.

They’d all grown up as children of the state. He didn’t doubt that his brothers would love to hear from their own blood family. It would’ve been wrong of him to rub it in their faces. Besides, the letters had brought back memories he’d rather have left buried.

The nightmares had come back after the first letter. Dreams that put him back in that car, trapped in the wreck, screaming for his parents, crying for them to save him. But both were already dead.

In his mind’s eye he could still see the blood dripping down his father’s face, past lifeless eyes.

He’d tried to forget, had buried it deep. Until those letters.

So when he said he had no interest in any part of his family, he wasn’t joking.

“I need a drink.” He headed off to town, with the only family he cared about right by his side.
